I am looking into a grad program at the University of Iowa and thinking about moving down there. I had a few friends who lived there around four years ago who claimed that the city had a good size gay and lesbian population and was fairly cheap and had enough to do. Is this still the case?

I've lived in Chicago my whole life, so I'm used to a large city with suburbs, but I wouldn't mind living someplace smaller. In fact, I've been living in the suburbs for the past few years.

Is the environment in Iowa City all that different? I've looked at Craigslist and Pad Mapper, but am never sure just how much weight to give them, but it seems like the cost of living in Iowa City is much lower. Also, I was wondering about public transit in Iowa City. Is a car absolutely necessary?

Thank you in advance and sorry if this post is repetitious. I didn't see any recent posts with inquiries like this as most of them reference families, etc.
