It's just a regular college town where the brunt of all "arrests" are for public intox and underage drinking. But it's not like 40 year old Iowa City citizens are hanging out at the college bars at 1am.

I'm sure Mt Vernon has less crime, but it's not like IC has real crime. Coming from LA, you will find "crime" in either city to be laughable.
1)Some crime gets very little reporting, so unless you are looking at the police blotter, one really doesn't the full picture of what is going on.

2)So there are no disorderly conduct citations issued on game days? No assault charges? And if there are, they are all going to college kids? Game day culture if you aren't drunk , can be somewhat troublesome, and has spread far outside the boundaries of Kinnick. Doesn't matter if they are Iowa City citizens or not I can guarantee you there are middle aged persons behaving questionably on these weekends. Heck I've even had my kids at the public library at 11 am on a Saturday and had to deal with some of these people.

3)For OP, I think if this is important to you, you'd need to do some research about crime stats comparing where you live now. Iowa City is certainly not crime free, and it is no longer just a quaint college town anymore..it has problems just like some of the larger cities in Iowa do.

I'm gonna chirp in on this conversation. I grew up in Monticello which is about 20 mins. from Mt. Vernon. Mt. Vernon is a very nice little community with great people. I know some people from the area. I have lived in Cedar Rapids for a year, and most recently, lived in North Liberty for the last 4 years. Just moved to Coralville in February. I will say this: if you are looking for a nice place to raise a family, move to Mt. Vernon. I personally would never live long-term in the Iowa City area. They do have great opportunities for the schools, Iowa City West is a great district as well as City High. My wife went to Iowa City West. She has also agreed after graduating from there and so forth that she would never want her kids to go to the Iowa City school districts. In recent years, the crime has gotten horrible down on the south side of Iowa City. A lot of transplants from the great city of Chicago is ruining eastern Iowa and it's great city life. Cedar Rapids is getting the same thing. So don't think Iowa City is as safe as everybody says it is. I work for the Department of Corrections in Coralville and I think I am safe to say that 1 in 6 people in our DOC is from the Chicago area. I will say as long as Chicago people keep moving here, the DOC personnel will never have to worry about not having a job.

There is crime throughout the NL/Coralville/Iowa City area...it isn't just limited to one part as the newspaper would like us to believe.

I found your comments a little confusing. You know that the Iowa City school district includes Iowa City, Coralville, and parts of North Liberty?
