Iv been looking for a home to buy since last October and have been told.. "You don't want a house south of highway 6 "..
But another friend who lived on Russel a few years ago said.. "not all the streets south of highway 6 are unsafe"..

Is this true? What streets are still safe for a single guy who leaves his home daily without digging a moat or erecting a electric barb wire fence?

Thanks!

How far south of 6 are you looking? It's not like the areas are bad all the way until you reach the Atlantic Ocean

You can combine the two things you've been told. At this time, not all of the areas are unsafe. However, you wouldn't want to buy a house, which is a long term financial commitment, to an area that has a meaningful risk of going downhill because the value of your property could drop. In those areas, renting may be a better option, because if the area turns downhill you would still be able to move to a better area at a reasonable cost.
