I am new to the area and just looking for ways to get out of the house. Can somebody tell me?

Sorry, I would need some more info before recommending anything. Is it just you? Children? Your age? Do you have a significant other? What are your interests?

I tried using google map to find directions out of the state. That worked very well. I feel your pain about the lack of activities. The best thing I found for the spring and fall months was the gorge. It's a beautiful area and great for going out to enjoy the scenery.

I forgot to come back here & insert a link I found for the Iowa City 175th Anniversary Commemoration weekend of events. Sorry about that as there was a nicely wide-ranging schedule of both indoor & outdoor activites planned for last weekend.
Did you happen to learn of it & attend?
Did anyone?

I am a young adult living by myself. I am a nature lover. I also like to explore, and read. Those are the only things I can list at the top of my head right now. Do you have any recommendations?

If you like to read, of course there's Prairie Lights (bookstore)--they have readings and other events sometimes (I think nothing until after the holidays, probably) as well as a cafe--there's an art exhibit in the cafe right now.

For nature and exploring, you could try Lake MacBride (lots of hiking, lake activities in better weather) or Coralville Lake (more hiking and lake activities, plus the fossil gorge!).

The Amanas are fun if you're interested in more cultural/historical exploration. If you're at all a Star Trek fan, you could check out Riverside, future birthplace of Starfleet Captain James T. Kirk, on your way . I think Riverside might have a casino, too.

Do any of these appeal?

Yes. All of those sound like fun, especially the cafe and the Amanas. Thank you!!

Are there group activities for the lake or fossil gorge? I am too afraid to go hiking by myself.

You can set up a guided tour of the gorge; more information here and also here.

I imagine there are hiking groups in Iowa City, but I'm not familiar with them, myself. I did find this group.

You might want to also post this question on the general Iowa board, as it gets more traffic and will include folks from Cedar Rapids as well as Iowa City.

I don't know if you can link to other websites but there's a website called meetup dot com where you can start groups or join groups you're interested in locally.

There are also some used/vintage book shops as well in town. Especially during the summer, there are plenty of parks in the area to explore. Lots of trails as well. Good luck!
