For a young woman who is new to Iowa, what are some places you can recommend that I go to relax outside of home?

You might enjoy visiting the Amana Colonies:

Oh good one about the Amana Colonies, thanks for bringing that up to memory. I've been meaning to go there for a while.

On your way to the Amanas stop by Kent County Park on Highway 6. They have a nice lake with a walking trail around it, campgrounds, and a swimming area. It's very peaceful and not crowded every time I've been there.

Between Amana and Middle Amana is Lily Pond Lake. In the summer it's very pretty with the lilies blooming on the lake (marshlands). They also have a walking/biking trail by the lake that connects to the Amanas.

Between CR and IC is Lake MacBride. You can rent a canoe, kayak, or paddle boat, or just hang out at the beach. The park also has a Rapter Center with trails all over the area.

Thanks! I was trying to remember that name the other day. I moved to Des Moines two years ago this month, and I'm still learning the rest of the state.

Your welcome! You might also want to check out Palisades-Kepler State Park off Highway 30 near Mount Vernon. This park is my favorite in the area. Then head over to Mount Vernon downtown and check out Cornell College and the little shops on Main Street.

From Mount Vernon head back south towards Iowa City and check out Sutliff Cider Company. I can't remember the road its on but there are quite a few cyclists on a good day

Don't forget to watch the corn grow. Guaranteed to provide hours of relaxation.

A friend took me on an evening picnic next to a corn field. It was very quiet, and I really did hear the corn grow! I think that's one of the most amazing things I've heard since I've been here.
