I remember when we moved to Iowa from Southern California our neighbors were transplants from northern Minnesota. When I complained about how cold it is in winter in Iowa, they just laughed and said it’s mild compared to Minnesota.

Exactly. Iowa City is almost tropic compared to northern Minnesota in the winter. I've had my kids living in Iowa City, Des Moines, and Omaha/Council Bluffs over the last 10+ years, which is 200 miles south as the crow flies from Sioux Falls, SD where we're at. Just that difference makes a huge difference in temperatures, primarily in the winter. Plus, they don't get the wind (and thus windchill factors) that we get. Whenever their friends complain, they laugh.
