My husband has accepted a job in Cedar Rapids with our two college-age sons, two little dogs, and a cat. We are planning on renting initially in order to get to know the area. We need at least 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a garage and preferably a basement. What are the average rental rates for something like this? Is it hard to find a pet-friendly rental? Also, what are the safest areas? My husband's job location is north of the river and west of 380. We are moving from the Albuquerque, NM area and enjoy hiking and fishing. Are there places to enjoy these activities in the area? What is the traffic like? We would appreciate any information that would help us make this transition.

There are many safe areas and a few not-so-good ones. Will you be able to make a visit to the area before moving? That's the best way to see where you are comfortable. In general, west of 380 and far enough north will be good. Also Marion or Hiawatha.

Traffic is negligible here compared with bigger cities. The only exception is if you have to drive 380 between CR and IC at rush hour.

There are no mountains or wilderness in Iowa. Fishing is popular although the water is not the cleanest in most places. That said, both walking and fishing are available at Coralville Lake (reservoir) south of CR. There are more scenic areas 1-2 hours away in northeast Iowa.

I agree with the above poster that west of 380 and further north, Marion and Hiawatha are all good options. I would avoid anything near downtown or the southern portion of SW Cedar Rapids. Personally, I would avoid SW Cedar Rapids completely. There have been more shootings in that area including downtown CR.
