I think the *progressiveness* you speak of is concentrated in certain areas of this state and all others. I lived in the TC and Iowa City as well and both are great, forward thinking places. I've been in Cedar Rapids though for the last 3 years and don't find that *feel* here. Regionally though, the midwest, IMHO, is the best of all the regions - I lived in the south and NE parts of the country and while I loved them both, the midwest certainly seems to tie the best of all things together nicely.

We do get a lot of snow though...but that's off topic

The Des Moine skywalk system is an attraction in itself. You can truly spend a weekend with your family there without even stepping outside. They have shops and malls and movie theaters all accessible from the skywalk. Cedar Rapids is pretty nice, but mostly shut down on the weekend. I really think Des Moines' skywalk system is one of their best kept secrets. They should play it up more in their tourism info.
