Just saw Iowa City was at the bottom of the list with 3.6% unemployment. The national rate was 8.5%.

Here's the Press-Citizen article if anyone's interested: http://press-citizen.com/article/200...905010324/1079

It's not surprising to me because our biggest employers are the University and UIHC, but it's always nice to see that we're doing well. It doesn't really seem like this area has been affected all that much, I've even seen a house on my street sell this week. (And home sales are usually slow in my neighborhood...)

There are lots of homes for sale on the west end of town, but probably not because of the economy. Maybe they're looking for bigger homes along Camp Cardinal road (along Hwy 218 between Melrose and the coralville strip) as lots of families around West High are growing. Take advantage of this! This is a great neighborhood to start a family.

Looks like unemployment in May actually FELL by .6% in Iowa City - again easily giving it the lowest unemployment in the country at 3.2%.

Unfortunately, this is likely to change now that UIHC has announced layoffs coming this month necessary to cut $45 million from its budget. Depending on the number of layoffs, this could really impact the Iowa City economy.
