hey everyone. i am currently living in Atlanta, Georgia, and my family have decided to move to Iowa b/c of job relocation. i was considering transferring from my college (GCSU, small public college) to the University of Iowa. i am a Pre-medical student that enjoys playing and listening to music and going to concerts in my spare time. could anybody help me out? i would love to hear opinions of people who ACTUALLY live in Iowa City. i've gotten used to hearing the (in my opinion) one sided stereotype from various people that "iowa is boring, flat, cold, and full of close-minded people". i was hoping someone here could tell me a straight up, unbiased assessment of Iowa City, IA.

Iowa City is very liberal for the state of Iowa. Although there probably isnt as much to do as Atlanta, Iowa City has a lot to offer if you are into the arts. University of Iowa has an awesome med program. It is very large, but after some adjustments should be good. As far as Iowa being cold- In the winter it is for sure that. But the summers are hot and humid. You get a little bit of everything as far as weather here.

I've never heard people say Iowa is full of close-minded people! I have only heard the exact opposite of Iowa City - it is almost TOO liberal for most people. It's a great city, tons to do. Lots of culture and arts, due to the university being there. No, there won't be as much going on as in Atlanta, but relatively speaking, there is a lot more to do there than in other towns it's size.

But yes, it's cold Summers are great though, and late spring, early fall is nice.

The Picador usually has good shows. It's right downtown on Washington and Gilbert.

Iowa City has a lot of different kinds of people and, as others said, is very liberal. There's also a vibrant bar culture for all kinds of people. There are plenty of frat-type bars like the Summit, but there are good chill bars downtown and around Prentiss and Gilbert.

Iowa City is much smaller than Atlanta (about 70,000, a third of them students) so you'll have to be a bit more creative about keeping yourself entertained. Winter is dismal but the rest of the year is fun. Lots of small towns that have festivals and arts shows should keep you busy in the summer.
