My partner and I are interested in building an intentional community in Iowa City/surrounding area. We are in a monogamous relationship, have an 18 month old son and are moving to Iowa City so I can attend school—and hopefully begin the writer’s workshop there in a few years. We are both writers and artists who have felt alienated from our community since moving to Iowa several years ago. We would like to start building alternative social structures with like-minded individuals/families. In the long term, I am interested in finding a community with which we could pursue homeschooling/unschooling, gardening, bartering, creating, and other activities. We think co-habitation-- though a future possibility—is not necessary.
I am interested in hearing anything about people’s experiences in these types of communities, as well as connecting with people who share a similar vision.
We are interested in local/whole foods, post-consumerism, parenting, art, philosophy, film, gardening, mediation, and learning the skills we need to return to a simpler way of life.

Iowa city is about your best bet. There are like minded people here and they stay here. At one point we had a minimal house. So come on over, we Iowa Citians are fine with just about anything, and don't let some of more snotty people turn you away. Most of us are open minded enough. The east side is traditionally more accepting of alternative lifestyles that the West side. Oh and the school districts is helpful to those that choose homeschooling. They help with curriculum, and get togethers for homeschoolers, etc.

You will fit right in in Iowa City. And the Utopian Amanas are close for a historic reference. I'm not being snarky btw, I love IC.
