Hello all.

My family of five are considering a move to this area next year. I work in accounting and my husband works for walmart. I was looking to get some insight from the locals about where to find rural homes for rent.

Also, any advice you could offer about the best schools, job research resources and anything else you want to offer relating to relocation.

I have concerns about the areas affected by flooding, so it would be very helpful to get some details about which areas (n,s,e,w) in Iowa City were most damaged.

Thanks to all for your help!!!

First off, welcome (maybe) to the Iowa City area!

I'm not having much luck finding rural home rentals online. I think you might have some trouble finding this around here. There are plenty of rural homes, and plenty of rental homes, but few of both. I'm sure they exist, but I'm not sure where to tell you to look, so hopefully someone else has some insight on this.

As for job research, here are the accounting jobs in the area as listed by the Iowa City Press-Citizen's website:
press-citizen.com - CareerBuilder - Jobs
I think the local classifieds are probably going to be your best bet. There are also quite a few accounting jobs in Cedar Rapids, (some of which are listed there) which is 20-30 minutes north of IC. If you live north of North Liberty, the commute isn't bad at all. You may be able to find a job in Iowa City too, but it's just another option for you to consider.

As for schools, I think that Iowa City Community School District is really hard to beat. Statewide, their high schools are some of the top performers every year, and their other schools are great too. I went to Iowa City schools K-12 and I think they are wonderful. If I were you, I would try to find a home within this district. ICCSD covers all of Iowa City, Coralville, and North Liberty east of Jones Blvd.

I've heard good things about College Community too, which is what Swisher feeds into. I don't know much about it, but other posters on this board have said good things about it in the past.

I'm pretty sure Shueyville feeds into Solon, which is an okay school district, but not as good as the other two, in my opinion.

Iowa City wasn't damaged nearly as much as Cedar Rapids in the floods, and most of the areas you are looking at should be fine. The only residential areas that were flooded in the area are the "Mosquito Flats" area of Iowa City (Normandy, Eastmoor, and Manor Drives) and a small part of Coralville at 5th St. and 3rd Ave. that has mostly been demolished now. There may have been a few homes by the lake that were damaged, but I don't think very many were.

Please feel free to ask any more questions you come up with. I hope this helps!
