Thanks!
I do the same thing, and (this is embarrassing) but I had no idea there was such a thing as a farm planner! I guess it stands to reason, but I'd not heard of it. Seems like this might be something you could almost have done mail order, using Google earth and a topo map, then have things installed to your wishes by someone local. Can't help with installation, either... everyone around us seems to have great luck with fence installs and then the guys don't show up for months with us... Are you thinking high tensile or high visibility horse fence? I know! Check with the folks at Premier fencing in Washington (Iowa -- about an hour south of Solon) -- they are great and I know they will help!

I do install my own waterers. Iowa is home to ALL the waterer companies, which, oddly enough, doesn't make them any easier to get. The farm stores seem to carry one brand. I mail order mine and thankfully shipping isn't bad since we're all in Iowa! Cedar Rapids is home to Nelson Manufacturing, which arguably has the best ones, although a bit more expensive. Again, no easier to get, really, just because you can go into the office and get it yourself, but satisfying to buy local and such a nice waterer!

I've always liked the Solon school, and I think it says great things about the town's priorities that they just pulled together to build a great new library. We've mentioned that you'll be close to Iowa City and CR, but don't discount Mt. Vernon -- see posts by Nedibes for her great assessment of the town for some fun places to eat and a great arts scene.
