My wife and I are looking to relocate to the area around Ames as it seems to fit our lifestyle. We both are curious about jobs, the university, and apartment rental costs. Do the state taxes eat into the income too much? I am interested in getting my Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Psychology at ISU. What is the length of time for residency for in-state tuition? We both are looking forward to replies for this. What is the employment situation like there. We are just two average people looking to better our situation. Greed and Oil and a dead Real Estate market are killing the local economy in Pensacola, FL.Thank you for your responses.

You can establish residency in 1 year. Here is a link to the guidelines, as given by ISU: Residency-Classification of Residents and Nonresidents for Admission and Tuition Purposes: Iowa State University Catalog 2007-2009

I am a current undergrad student at ISU, so if you have any specific questions about the University, I would be happy to answer.

As for apartments, google "Ames rentals" and look through the property companies' websites. Unfortunately, that is the easiest way to see them. There isn't a comprehensive website for all of the available Ames rentals, as far as I can tell. I know 1BR apartments start at roughly $450, but newer apartments are probably going to run over $600 or so.
