I grew up in Waterloo. Born in 1960 and lived there until 1980. I get back every few years to visit family and the whole Waterloo/Cedar Falls area seems the same as when I left. Went to a Fridayloo or whatever it was called and saw lots of old friends. They seem stuck and in a time warp. Nothing but complaining about the economy and crappy jobs they've settled for. Not many happy stories being told! I swear a few of them were still wearing the same flannel shirt from 30 yrs ago! LOL

Anyway,
The things I miss about Waterloo are:
Family.
Green apples right off the tree in late summer.
Out of this world sweet corn.
Fresh corn fed beef and pork.
Tenderloins! had 3 on my last visit. YUM!
Pheasant hunting.
Fishing the Cedar River and the Wapsipenican (sp?).
Drives to NE Iowa. Beautiful up by the Mississippi river.
Cute little homes in quaint neighborhoods. They haven't changed much in 30 years!
The sound of a distant train.
Slow pace of life compared to larger cities. No traffic to speak of.
You can be anywhere in 10 minutes any time of day.

My family members that still live in the area are very happy and successful. John Deere was good to them and they have nice retirements and no plans to leave. In 1980 they were letting people go instead of hiring or I would have probably stayed and be approaching retirement myself. All my neices and nephews got excellent educations in Iowa and are doing well. Having lived in other places I don't feel that crime is anywhere near what some people post here. Waterloo still seems like a nice city to live in. Just not for me.
Brutal winters in my opinion!

"Iowa, a place to grow". Is that still the motto? I agree that it's a great place to grow up. Then what?

For what it's worth. Lot's of Bosnian families have settled in Waterloo in the last few decades. Both my Mom and my brother in law say they are great neighbors. Clean, quiet, friendly, and respectful. And they make some of the best bread!

If I were looking for work and got offered a job in Waterloo or Cedar Falls I wouldn't hesitate moving a family there. You might get bored depending on where you are coming from but you will have everything you need and more. It looks to me that the cost of living is very reasonable but it's expensive to live in the VI so every place seems reasonable to me. Except maybe California and NY city.

Where did you move to, and what about that place do you prefer more than WL/Iowa?

I'm guessing that he/she moved to the US Virgin Islands given the screen name and the reference to the VI.

Currently living in the US Virgin Islands. St Croix to be specific.
Have lived in St Paul Minn. then Houston for 20 yrs.
We've been here just over 10 yrs now.

I stay for the weather. Doors wide open 365 days a year. No heat or AC required in the hills. We also own a house here as well as a small business so we're here for awhile. Might have to relocate one day when we get older but not sure where that will be.

I read these forums and often wonder what would be my next and possibly final move.

Back to Waterloo? I wouldn't rule it out but probably not. Too cold!
