HI -

My absolute favorite place in the whole United States is Effigy Mounds in NE Iowa. I'd love to move down to that area, and in fact travelled there last spring on an exploratory trip. It is so beautiful! Housing is really cheap, too. I wonder about the economy, though. How are people surviving? Tourism? I don't have to work full-time anymore, but it would be nice if there were some part-time or seasonal jobs everyone isn't fighting over. How about Meth? Is it still a huge problem? Are any of these river towns worse than the others when it comes to meth use and crime? I do know to stay away from Postville. Any advice you can give me about what daily life would be like for a middle aged middle class unreligious woman in these beautiful river towns would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Prairie Du Chein is a nice river town not far from Effigy mounds that would offer some employment possibilities. Not great, high paying jobs though which is basically true of any smaller towns anywhere.

Meth is everywhere but crime in that area is relatively low.
