...anyone? Fairly easy to get to know people? Friendly? Reasonably accepting of outsiders?

Any negatives anyone can think of off the top of their head?

Which SE Iowa community is Spencer most like?

It looks as though with someone with a grudge or perhaps good reason to dislike & bad mouth Spencer has gotten here first & they may have just joined the forum to do so.
Does anyone have any detailed answers for the op?
When I was a kid in north central Iowa years ago, we traveled over that way regularly & found that Spencer was a clean & progressive community with a great reputation.
I don't know that it's really similar to any place in southeast Iowa though unless you could make a stretch & say Mount Pleasant.

I considered moving to Spencer when they opened the Menards store there years ago until I found out the store would be on the company's rural pay scale which would have meant a $2/hour pay cut at the time. When I researched the area it seemed like a nice place but that's been a few years ago.

Duster
You're in Keosaqua..I've actually been there once.
So, perhaps you have an angle on the question the op had about if Spencer was like any community in southeast Iowa.
I ventured that it might be Mount Pleasant in a stretch at best.

Mount Pleasant isn't a bad comparison. Spencer's got kind of an artsy vibe; I'd say its really more like Fairfield only without the Maharishi influence.

In a way it really seems like a bigger town, probably because it's out there by itself and can support more local businesses and services than a similarly-sized town in this area. From Fairfield or Mount Pleasant a person can be in Iowa City in less than an hour and Des Moines in about two.

Yeah, duster, I agree that Spencer's relative geographic isolation with few peer cities around of it's size give it an advantage as a retail center for a large trade area.
years ago Grand Avenue supported a bustling business district & the shopping center on the north side was built in the 1960 era & had a small Younkers store.
The nearest rival shopping hub towns to it would be Fort Dodge, Storm lake & Worthington, Mn.
By comparison, southeast Iowa is more heavily populated & the site of several medium-sized to towns on up to true cities.

They don't have a building over 400 feet tall. That's a deal-killer for most people looking for a great place to live.

...Or, so I've been told.

Negatives.... You'd be in a small town in the middle of nowhere. Unless you want that...

Family that live outside Iowa will be vastly less likely to visit.

Not entirely true when the family discovers that only a few miles straight north is the Iowa Great Lakes.
