We are moving back to central Iowa by the end of the year so that my husband can start a new job at the beginning of January. We have a 4.5 month old baby that will need a new daycare provider. We love the in-home daycare that he is in now. It is licensed, includes an educational component for older kids, in our subdivision, super reasonable ($115/week), and the worst violation that she has had from inspections is not having all of the required paperwork in order. The 2nd place daycare we had picked out for here was nearly $1300/mo. (our current area is very affluent) and was one step lower on the quality component assigned by the state.

We have our names on a waiting list for the daycare on the Iowa State campus - a friend has worked at it for several years. It is double the price but the quality doesn't sound like it can be beat. Part of the problem is that he just accepted the job last week and I don't know where I will be working yet. It could be anywhere from Des Moines to Clarion. So we need one in Ames (where my husband will be working). We also will not be making another trip there before the move (unless I have to for an interview) and therefore cannot check out any of the daycares and instead have to blindly be added to the waiting lists.

Any great daycares in Ames that you can recommend?

When we lived in that area we took my daughter to the Whistle Stop in Huxley, 9 miles south of Ames, and can't say enough about the quality of care she received there. I knew of severl people from both Ames and Ankeny who took their kids there.

Religious daycare is a good option. A lot of houses of worship have them.
