Hi! I was wondering if anyone could give me any information on Council Bluffs. I've looking onto a job there, moving from CT. Any pros and con's from your perspectives? Traffic, crime, rents, recreation, etc...?

Thank you!

It's smaller but nice. I'm not intimately familiar with Council Bluffs, but keep in mind it's literally across the Missouri River from Omaha, NE-Metro area of about 400,000, but it doesn't feel like it. Amtrak. Very good airport. 18,000 and 9,000 seat arenas - multiple theatres, (movie theatres too), University of Nebraska at Omaha, Creighton University, multiple/quality hospitals in the area, crime rate not bad. Weather? Midwest weather. HOT COLD TORNADOS RAIN...it's got it all. Decent wages, decent living costs. I'd like to move there...had an interview in CB recently, and really wanted the job. There. Now more qualified persons will give their opinions.

I sure hope CB is a good place to live because I am moving there next month. I will be looking for a job and I really need to find a place to live. My husband is disabled from a stroke and we have a 18 month old child. I sure hope I can have a better life there because Missouri has given me nothing but heartache and a foot up my ass. Also, I am a middle aged woman with a hiatel hernia in my stomach and I am no spring chicken. I am just like anyone else trying to have a decent life.

Omaha's metro is actually in the 840,000 range, which includes Council Bluffs. However, the actual City of Omaha population has in upwards of 450,000. Council Bluffs has a population of around 60,000, and is a mostly blue collar town that the Omaha folks have coined "Counciltucky". They have casino gambling, the Missouri River, a decent bike trail system that you can ride all the way to Missouri on, a nice public art initiative, and its close proximity to Omaha. They've done some nice things in their downtown over the last few years, and revamped their main park there. Council Bluffs has a rich history, with many nice old homes up in the bluffs. Real estate is definitely cheaper on that side of the river, then over in Omaha.

There is a reason Council Bluffs is well-known as:
- Omaha's Trailer Court.
- CouncilTucky.
- The town where the squirrels are black and the trash is white.

To be honest, I doubt that you'll like the move from CT to Council Bluffs. You may not find Omaha to be much more appealing. It's going to be VERY different from the NE.

Also, if you're in Council Bluffs for a job interview, be VERY CAREFUL of ALL INTERSECTIONS WITH STOP LIGHTS. The City of Council Bluffs has installed Red Light Cameras all over town, and has shortened the duration of the yellow lights to less than 3 seconds. It is virtually impossible to not get caught running a red light, unless you slam on the brakes and skid to a stop when you see yellow. And if you get snagged, the fine is now $197 for a red light violation.

Well... On the plus side, there is quite a bit of cheap real estate in Council Bluffs.

Good luck!

Do you have a hard time stopping at red lights?

No, I don't. But nice try.

The City of Council Bluffs has shortened the duration of their "red light camera equipped" yellow lights to just under 3 seconds.

This is in spite of the fact that multiple studies have proven that lengthening the duration of the yellow light is was causes a decline in red light running, and eliminates accidents.

You have obviously never been in a 35 mph zone and hit any such light. The "norm" for yellow lights in a 35 mph zone is 4.5 to 5 seconds.

Council bluffs is across the river from downtown Omaha. The city has recently seen some very nice upgrades because of this.

You'll like it.
