Of Iowa? In the winter? Chicago, Kansas City, Twin Cities, St. Louis, Duluth...in the summer if 2 more hours' drive was OK, I'd highly recommend Houghton, Michigan and surrounding area. But you'd have to do research first to find out what to visit. Wisconsin Dells, WI if you like certain types of commercialized vacation activities (not my cup of tea, but clearly is for a lot of people...google it if you're curious).

It's almost impossible to give a useful answer unless you mention what types of activities you'd be looking to do. Each place has wildly different activities to offer.

For scenery, you don't even have to leave Iowa...Dubuque and the surrounding area along the Mississippi is absolutely gorgeous. But the 15-minute drive to Galena, IL is a must if you're in the area.

Default driving trip

Oops, guess I left out some peritinent info. I live in the Des Moines, Iowa area so anywhere 4-6 hours from there. Probably over spring break in March, but sometime over the summer would work too.
I have the done the Dubuque, Galena thing and it IS beautiful. The riverboat cruises are pretty cool too.
I like outdoor activities, like riding bike trails or hiking. My teenagers, not quite so fond of them, they'd probably rather be shopping Somewhere with both would be great!

Well, if they want to shop, Mall of America in MN would be the obvious choice. You could shop, visit the zoo's, some of the historic sites, spend some time around the lakes, etc. in the summer. The zoos are open year round and have plenty of indoor exhibits.

St. Louis is great too. Plenty of shopping around the area, visit the Arch, nice zoo, best chance of nice weather during spring break.

Chicago would be another suggestion.
