My husband and I are relocating to the area shortly and would like to rent a house for a year until we are comfortable with the area. We visited and toured with a real estate agent to buy, but we weren't ready.

Maybe I am missing something, but is it really this hard to rent a house? We saw one listing that was extremely overpriced. We have tried Craigslist, Ruhl & Ruhl, Chamber of Commerce, Ace Rentals, etc.

Ideally, we are looking for a 3-4 bedroom house (not apt because we have a dog and want the yard) in Bettendorf...........

Thanks for any web sites or suggestions!

This is definitely a tough rental market, partly because its cheaper to buy than rent. That said, looking for a specific size house like that in a smaller city whose home prices are at least 10% higher than similar east Davenport homes is definitely contributing to the difficulty. Not that its easy in Davenport either, but just looking at Rentals.com for 90 seconds I saw 2 3BR homes in good neighborhoods in Davenport for around $1k a month. I think I saw the Bettendorf one you mentioned as well, if it was the $3,000 a month one...

The Quad City Times is probably your best bet if you're looking for rentals.

oinkerville - what do you mean by everybody is renting? Is that mostly because of the housing market being so new and people are afraid to buy? or is it because the companies out there make it such a transient population?

Everyone I know in the QCA seems to be buying. And the population has been growing, so I wouldn't think it was transient.

There are also a lot of grad students and college students looking to rent this time of year. I hope you do find something. qcfsbo.com has a rent section, but it's currently empty.

If you do wind up wanting or needing an apartment, Kimberly Club allows pets and is on the border between Davenport and Bettendorf. There was (I'm not sure now) some space for the dogs to run around in, though it wasn't fenced off. There's a dog park in downtown Davenport too that looks pretty nice.

This is nationwide. Banks are making it harder for people to qualify for mortgages, so many more people are renting.
