I am from St Louis and we have fallen in love with Iowa since my daughter started attending U of Iowa 3 years ago. I have been intrigued by the English River and English Township as my distant relative and early St Louis resident Ezra English moved to Iowa sometime in the 1800s. We found a newspaper article noting his death. He at one time operated and owned the English Brewing Company in St.Louis. I would love to know if there is any connection to he and English township.

There are several counties in Southeast Iowa that have townships by that name. As far as I know they are all named for the English river, but I have no idea who or what the English River is named for.
