Well, 2/3rds of it - of the three families profiled, one is near Stockton/I-80, one is in Davenport, and one is in San Francisco. It's interesting to see how America and Iowa in particular is being represented overseas:

This World - America's Poor Kids (BBC documentary)

And a related news article from the BBC:

The children going hungry in America

How terrible---and how close to home it hits many of us!

What bugs me---what's with the "foreign" guy working the desk at the hotel? he's obviously not from here. Who hired him? Start by firing his behind, and hire one of the Americans begging for shelter. By letting anything and everything in here, we've slighted our own. My dh job went to India, and he's here--- What's wrong with this picture?

So where's CPS in all this? We've been hounded by CPS for years, even though we provide a stable home, above-average income, decent, hard-working citizens. somehow we got on their $$$$-list, and get "investigated" for any little thing! Guess we don't provide a decent environment, so, they think they could do better?

The pets is what killed me! I volunteered at a pet shelter, the primary reason people surrendered their pets was financial. We adopted a beautiful cat an elderly lady had to give up.....

My kids also volunteered in food banks via their Sunday School---it was an eye-opener. The stuff my kids throw away hungry people were lined up for.

Its only going to get worse!

or the owners son.. which probably pays taxes, and hires some other workers so the other workers can have a job.

What surprises me is the number of very poor people who stay in Iowa. With pretty much nothing left to lose, they might as well move somewhere with a nicer climate. I wasn't surprised to find neither of them were in Des Moines, which has more opportunities and a more reasonable cost of living than most of Iowa. I was surprised that neither were in Iowa City. Thank goodness for the food banks. I'd encourage anyone to go spend some time in one. There is always work to be done, and your time will benefit you and the people you are assisting.

The foreigner behind the desk... at first I thought it was an Obama reference.

The UK has plenty of problems of its own it could be discussing.
