So the six character numeric-alpha scheme has run dry and they're going back to alpha-numeric. Seems to me the state of Iowa could have retired the farm foreground, cityscape-***-thunderhead bacground scheme. But no, they opted to go to part two of this ugly graphic design.

A lot of states have gone to an overly complex license plate design, and most of them don't work. Why not return to solid color design, and enlarge the annual fee sticker to include "Iowa 2014" or whatever year it is. Each year, there would be a contest to design graphics for the Iowa sticker. It would go BELOW the letters and numbers. It could give a fresh appearance to the plates every year.

A lot of states put the stickers above the letters/numbers to curb tab theft.
