Hi All,

I moved to Dubuque from Chicago Suburbs last winter for work, and I consistently go home, and have not really "FIT in " per say here. The town just seems hard to meet people, and very isolated. I'm contemplating moving back to the suburbs and getting a different job. Has anyone felt this same anxiety about moving to dubuque alone? BTW, im 30 yrs old male / single.

Hate to make it a negative thread, maybe the job and the loneliness that are bothering me more than the city. But I really find it hard to get excited about anything anymore

I don't live in DBQ, so maybe I am not the best person to give advice, but I am wondering what you have tried to meet people?

Every city has a different dynamic, but there are ways to meet people if you look for them. For instance, do you have a specific interest? Meetup.com is a good way to connect to people. (I met several via meetup when I joined a chihuahua group to get our dogs together). But, basically, you might have to work at it a bit to find other like minded people.

Hopefully someone else can help you with ideas on ways to meet people so you don't feel so alone.

I certainly won't say that it is city specific but I do know that you have to really put yourself out there to meet people and find your niche.
I've moved 2x to areas where I knew no one and had to really try different things to meet people and find a group that I clicked with. It took some work and some weird encounters but I stuck with it and made lifelong friends in both places. Sometimes you have to go out of your comfort zone.
A few ideas:
Join a rec league sports team
Ask people at work to join you for an outing or ask them where they go
Take a class thru the park/rec or community college such as cooking, photography, or any interest
Join a church
Try the meet ups as mentioned above
Good luck
