Everyone tells me Dubuque, Iowa is a great place to live. A great place to raise your children. I was born and raise in Chicago. To be honest with you I am tired of Chicago. My children can't go outside and play. I am tired of the violence and the killing that goes on everyday. I understand that every cities has violence but I want to move to a better city. I want a city that is smaller than Chicago. My husband and I are planning on making that move next summer. If anyone can tell me am I making the right choice. Can you please tell me what side of town to live on and where to avoid. Thank- You

I don't live in Dubuque so I can't answer your questions about specific areas, but it is a beautiful area and still a fairly easy drive to visit friends and family in Chicago. Hopefully someone who knows more about it will chime in and give you some more specific tips. Good luck with your move!

As Nedibes wrote earlier today, the Dubuque area is geographically a stunningly beautiful area that sits in the Mississippi River valley & on it's bluffs!
The old & historic original city is on the valley floor & the city has expanded up the bluff sides & over the crest of them & on toward the west. Generally the further west you go in Dubuque, the newer the area.
Dubuque is a very Caucasian & Catholic dominated city & is perhaps the least diverse ethnically speaking of Iowa's cities of over 50,000 population.
There is typically little of what I would consider to be serious crime in Dubuque & it would be very quiet as compared to the City of Chicago. However, if you were to ask an Iowan from a very small town, they might tell you that it is noisy & crime-ridden. It all depends on varying perspectives & experiences.

I have a friend that moved to Iowa with her two boys from Chicago and she loves it here. Her kids go to a great school and lives in a great neighborhood . Bettendorf Iowa is a great place to live. Great schools, great neighborhoods. It's ten minutes from the Illinois border and it has great shopping and great restaurants . If not interested in that area then you can also check out davenport Iowa which has a more diverse population or moline Illinois which is right across the river plus traveling to Chicago is about two and a half hours and there are buses that go their daily
