“Could the third time be a charm for the Cedar Rapids casino dream?”

The Racing and Gambling Commission has already denied the city’s request twice, 2014 and 2017, but with voter support, the new mayor and city leaders say they’re ready to make a dream come true for Cedar Rapids, the second largest city in the state of Iowa.

City leaders believe a casino in downtown, next to Interstate 380 and the Cedar River, would make Cedar Rapids a major destination for tourists and residents alike. Many residents argue they wouldn’t have to waste their time traveling to other casinos in Tama (Meskwaki-40 miles), Waterloo (50 miles), the Quad Cities (80 miles-3 casinos) Dubuque (50 miles) or Des Moines (120 miles).

The prospect of more jobs, less travel time to other casinos, and revenue are major considerations for supporters and for Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell, a former Emmy-award winning journalist (news anchor for Cedar Rapids) and Chief Executive Officer of Women Lead Change.

Casinos are never a good idea. Remember, the lights and dreams are funded by losing money! Las Vegas, nah city of Lost Wages!

Low paying service jobs and every dollar they get is money removed from the community spending is the result of casinos.

It’s sad and discouraging to watch these city leaders try to justify building a casino when we already have so many nearby and throughout the state. Shootings have notably increased in the many poverty-stricken neighborhoods surrounding downtown yet we hear little how they plan to deal with these issues.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a Riverside Casino on the south edge of Iowa City? That's a pretty short jaunt from Cedar Rapids.

Yep. 30-40 minutes down Interstate 380/218 (I forgot about that one in my OP).
