Winter? You are moving to Northern Iowa.....even in Des Moines metro we have days where wind chill makes the temperature feel like -20 or so. Once you get up into the more northern parts of the Midwest you will be freezing no matter what at some point. The difference between 0 and -10 is not really that noticeable it's not like the difference between 70s and 80s. I'd live in Minnesota or ND rather than drop thousands on inconvenient flights and travel which can also be delayed due to weather.

man housing in Decorah is impossible...Maybe going to check out Winterset? I just want a nice town no more than 20k population. I really like the rolling hills of Decorah I am already "doing" flat here in Maryland. The search continues.

Look across the border in MN - cheaper home prices and property taxes, and still within an easy drive of Decorah. Caledonia, Spring Grove, Mabel, Harmony - take a look at all of these beautiful small towns.

I'll also throw Prairie du Chien (WI), Charles City (IA), and Chatfield (MN) on that list.

I'd even throw in Jordan or St. Peter, MN. Neither are all that far from MSP.

Northfield is also just like Decorah, but it might be just a shade too big?

Thanks everyone! we are looking HARD at Northfield...just no HOusing in Decorah, and I agree with the cost of flying etc. being too much. We have family in Menomonie WI also, they would love to have us, any thoughts on that area? Schools? Taxes are higher than WI that's for sure.

one more thing...he wont be working in ND during the winter. It is very seasonal out there, so the flight home wouldn't be in the winter at all. I am researching all of the areas in IA, and some mentioned in MN
