Yesterday I got the news that I made it onto the short list of phone interviewees for the position in question. Interview scheduled for Thursday morning, so these next few days I'm going to be (cautiously) optimistic about this whole thing.

The position will not be high-paying, but I'm under the impression that cost of living is fairly cheap there?

It depends on where you are moving from.

Gas is under $3 right now, car insurance here is relatively cheap, and for $1250 you can get a pretty awesome 2 bedroom downtown loft like this one. In more suburban locations you can get more amenities/square footage for your money, but without the cool factor. You can find a decent 2 bedroom 1 bath apartment for under $1k. So rent isn't amazingly cheap here, unfortunately for you. If you were planning on staying, I'd show you some amazing deals on purchasing homes, but that wouldn't be prudent for what you hope to be a temporary rung on the ladder.

Compared to most places, you'll find the cost of living to be relatively cheap. That's the beauty of relocating to an area few people would ever consider. The demand for real estate is pretty low, so prices will reflect that reality. It even extends beyond real estate. Since wages/salaries are a pittance in the Quad Cities, most businesses will only charge what the local market can bear. Like most things in Davenport, that is a pretty low bar.

Great! That'll be one advantage over Washington, where the price of practically everything has skyrocketed.

That is happening all over the country. If by East Washington you mean Spokane, the savings won't be as much as you are hoping. If you meant East Washington D.C., then you'll see a huge reduction.

That's not exactly an expensive price for a 2300 square foot house.

In davenport for the exact same price you can get a trailer-turned-house with a broken garage door and the whole thing is offered as is! Oh great deal. http://www.realtor.com/realestateand...39-56340?row=1

Good luck on this huge cost of living reduction. You'll enjoy going from no state income tax to extremely high state income taxes

PS. The trailer turned house in Davenport actually has dramatically higher property taxes as well. I'll be watching for this thread to develop over the next several years.

Well that escalated quickly.

Still waiting to hear back from my potential employer, who I believe just finished the primary interviews. There may be a second round to come, but he told me that they'll reach a final decision either way by the first week of December.

I also got the impression that the position I applied for tends to be a one-to-two year venture for most people, as somewhat of a "welcome to the business" position before ideally being shipped off to bigger and better things. So, it's not looking as if I'd be in Davenport long, mostly just a proverbial truck stop.
