My wife and I (and our dog) are moving back to the Boone/Ames area soon, and we are looking for houses to rent, but don't see much online. I grew up in Boone, but I'm not sure how to secure a house before we get there. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Daniel,

I understand your predicament! Most people in your situation opt to have a friend or relative personally visit any rental they are considering. Craigslist and high volume real estate offices often have information on single family rentals that aren't available on other paid ad sites.

Be cautious about wiring a deposit, though. There have been several Craigslist scams where the individuals who posted the rental information did not own or manage the property. It's easy to verify who owns a property by visiting the county assessor's website.

Contact the Ames housing department and they can give you a list of landlords. Call Hunziker, Fredrich Realty(sp?), etc and get a list from them. Without making calls you won't find anything.

Check out: Ames, IA Apartments and Houses for Rent, Local Apartment and Home Rentals, House, Townhome, and Condo Rentals, Vacation Rentals, Roommate and Sublet Classifieds :: Search Results - Page 1 - paying attention to the dates. Many many places in town won't open up until August 1st (you can ignore the Available column, it's really just if the listing is active or not). Keep up on Craigslist too, as some subleases may come up. And the Iowa State Daily paper is a good source: Homes Rentals - Classifieds - Iowa State Daily (http://www.iowastatedaily.com/classifieds/homes_rentals/ - broken link)

Hi Again Daniel,

Have you checked the Boone News Republican classifieds? That is where I found a rental when I first moved to Boone. Here is the link. Good luck!
