The past weekend was a mild one in Iowa & the extended forecast looks great with lots of 50's & 60's in abundance in the 10 day forecast.
Weather in Iowa being what it is, there is no guarantee that this will hold but it's a great & welcome long break.
Des Moines hit 56 on Sunday & a string of mid 60's temps are to begin on Tuesday.
Is there any snowcover left where you reside in Iowa or in neighboring states?

The snow is rapidly melting from that last dose of late winter snow. We have a pretty fast running river down the sidewalks here and with the near 60° temps today, I expect that the last of the snow will be gone today...maybe a few piles in the shaded north side of buildings, etc. Thinking about pulling out some shorts for later this week

It's been a wild few weeks, with a few 30 and 40 degree temperature swings in just a day's time. I think we're due for some wild spring weather. Better batten down the hatches.

This has been a sharp transition from well below average temperatures to above average temperatures. I am concerned about a dry trend developing with little in the way of precipitation chances over the next few weeks.

Such a sudden transition can also cause equally sudden flooding threats when a rapid melt & deterioration of ice on rivers cause ice flow jams to collect. Obviously such jams are difficult to predict.

In the Sioux City area, patchy snow still on ground. Many lakes and streams with ice. Temperature in the upper 50's right now.

I feel bad for the three old fellas from Creston that drowned, they fell thru the ice on a farm pond while ice fishing yesterday. I was just out on the ice last Thursday at Raccoon River Valley Park in WDM, it was 21 degrees that day, and I knew from the forecast that it would be the last really safe day to take a walk on the ice. Glad I took advantage of the last real hard winter's day in Iowa. I enjoy a good ice walk every other year or so, just to get that north pole type feeling, dreaming about seal hunts and polar bears, lol. I like to do that once every few years, gets me pumped when I hear the pings from the plates of ice as you walk across, and some occasional cracking sounds in a few isolated spots. Definitely makes you back up and turn around quick when that happens.

This past February and first week of March was brutally cold, but we had a couple weeks of warm weather in the last 2 weeks of January, and most of December was warm so it wasn't as bad as last year's polar vortex winter. We only had one real storm in Des Moines on Feb 1st, of 11 inches, and not much more than a trace since then, but quite a bit more to the north. It's supposed to get up near 70 for the next few days and I cant help but think how strange it was that just last week I was on a polar ice expedition hunting seals and tomorrow I might go for a bike ride.

We have 77 degrees here in Atlanta at mid afternoon and it's 68 in Des Moines.
My friend there wrote me about all the people walking around in shorts & skipping out on various things that they supposedly ought to be doing.
Hooray!
