I moved to Colorado from Iowa in 1997 after graduating from Iowa State. I'm curious to hear from others experiences if you moved away and now are back. It would also be helpful to know where you moved to in order to get a sense of how different the culture of your previous home was compared to Iowa. Thanks!

I'm not a native of Iowa but know a couple of families who moved back to Iowa from Southern California where they had began their careers in engineering after graduation. When they started having kids approaching school age they were able to transfer with Rockwell to Cedar Rapids. Primary reasons were the slower pace of life, much less crowded, preferred the Midwest vibe, schools, family in Iowa, and substantially less COL. Another family moved back from Portland Oregon for most of the same reasons, though they were in the medical field and would have stayed in Oregon if not for the high cost of starting a practice there compared to Cedar Rapids. Another friend of mine moved back from Phoenix after several years in the construction industry there and in Las Vegas. His kids were grown up by then and his son took over the company in Phoenix. My friend missed the green Iowa countryside, his extended family, and wanted out of the rat race while he was still ahead financially. He started a smaller company in Iowa and lives out in the country on several acres. His son is still in Phoenix but wants a second home in Iowa during the summers (his wife is a native of Arizona and has no desire to live in Iowa full time, i.e. winters).
