We are coming towards there to visit Omaha zoo and will be staying in Carter Lake area. We have an entire evening to spend somewhere since we are reaching Carter Lake by noon and will be visiting zoo next day morning.

Could you suggest some places around to visit. Thanks!

I might suggest you also post this thread in the Omaha section of the Nebraska forum too.
Because of the change in the bed of the Missouri River long ago, Carter Lake, Iowa was physically cut off from the rest of the State of Iowa & thus surrounded completely by Nebraska and/or the old river bed that is now called "Carter Lake", an actual small oxbow type of lake.
There was a court case in the 1960's that went all of the way to the U.S. Supreme Court when Nebraska attempted to seize Carter Lake from Iowa. Nebraska was rebuffed & Carter Lake remains in Iowa but because of it's isolation, it is perhaps the most forgotten/overlooked town in Iowa.
As such, you might get more response on the Omaha forum given that they are far more informed about & aware of Carter Lake than are most Iowans.

Atler8 has the right of it. There's really nothing to see in Carter Lake itself. Ask instead what things to check out in Omaha or Council Bluffs.

My 2cents: Lauritzen Gardens, the riverfront including Heartland Park especially if they still have the boat rides (an early evening favorite) Johnny's Cafe for real Omaha steaks or the Alpine Inn for unique dining. It's a great town.
