My husband and I have been talking about moving to Iowa for years. We really wanna dive in and move, along with out 4 kids and critters. We're looking at the Lee County area, because we like the idea of being where the 3 states meet together, and being on the East side of Iowa, as close to Ohio as we can get I guess. We would need to rent for the first year probably, and would like something in the country. Does anybody have any helpful suggestions? Cheap places to rent in the country? Preferably a 3 bedroom house at least, but would settle for a 2 bedroom trailer or camper for a little bit. Great places for jobs? Any advice would be really appreciated!!!

Hi, CCM! I lived in Columbus, OH for 17 years and before that, NW OH. I moved out here 3 years ago. I really like it!

I live in Des Moines and can't really speak about the rest of the state, but if you get interested in my area, let me know.

Two big differences: winters are much colder here with more snow and less ice, and there is a lot more sunshine in the winter. My SAD is gone!

I'm from Michigan originally, and the culture is pretty much the same. It's probably a tad less friendly than Central and Southern Ohio, but pretty similar in culture to N. OH, minus the Great Lakes (and large beach culture).

In any case, you shouldn't have any major problems adjusting.

Hello
Glad to learn of your interest in Iowa.
What would be the career needs for you &/or your spouse?
Lee County has some beautiful Mississippi River terrain & scenery and the Des Moines River also forms yet another boundary of the county so Lee County is surrounded by water-based recreational opportunities on it's eastern & western/southern sides.
The 2 small cities in the county are Keokuk & Fort Madison. Both have a lot of historical value & an older stock of buildings and housing but have been on a population & economic trend line of decline for decades. As a result, they have higher than average levels of poverty & unemployment especially as compared to most of the rest of Iowa.
That's why I asked about your career needs.
Immediately below are 2 links to information about larger employers in Fort Madison & in Keokuk which have thankfully made some progress in recruiting new business. A 3rd link tells of a very recent announcement that a company plans to reopen soon.
