Is Hy-Vee A Decent Company To Work For? (Home Depot, high school)

Since Iowa has more stores than any other state, I figured I would post this here.

I was just wondering if Hy-Vee is a decent company to work for. Has anyone had any experience with them, and was it good or bad?

All I know is that there is a helpful smile in every aisle... and that it is an employee owned company. In theory, if you own a small part of the franchise, you will work harder than if you own 0%.

Never worked for them, but a few years ago I lived in Nebraska and would drive several miles past other grocers to shop at Hy Vee. That particular store was cleaner and the employees were always friendly and helpful. I don't know much about Hy Vee but that was my experience as a customer in the mid 90's. For entry level work...eh, I'd rather work at Menards or Home Depot. My first job was in a grocery store back in Texas, I got paid horribly, so left it to work in retail. Home Depot was my favorite entry level position (out of Target, Walgreens and the grocery store), before I started my career.

Menards FTW. At least when you ask an employee at Menard's, they usually know where something is, or at least refer you to somebody who does. Home Depot employees, for the most part, say "huh?" or even worse "we don't carry that" and then you find it a half hour later after searching all around the store.

Anyway, Hy-Vee is a good grocery store chain and it seems like most of the people there are pretty normal and helpful. They employ a lot of high school kids and those fresh out of high school.

I have a friend who has worked for Hy-Vee for several years in various capacities including cashier, pharmacy, garden centers, and something more administrative or bookkeeping-related. She doesn't complain about her job and she hasn't been looking for anything else, so I'm thinking she likes it well enough.

I started as a bagger and moved up to customer service from age 16 to 20. Yes, in general it is a very good place to work, and it certainly has a lot of room to move up if that's your desire. I was just doing it as an after school gig, but some of my friends stayed on after they graduated and quickly moved up to managers and back end people making good salaries with nice benefits.

As with just about any entry-level, service industry job, whether a place is good to work for or not is directly related to the store's management. It's always a hit/miss proposition based on the particular store you're looking at, but I think your chances of it being a good experience are better at Hy-Vee than many of its competitors. There seems to be some type of expectation from corporate that sets their standards a little higher than many others.
