I recently moved to Phoenix, and recently saw my first ice cream truck. When I mentioned this to a friend, he refused to believe that there were no ice cream trucks in Iowa. I grew up in Burlington and never saw one, and spent the last 12 years in Des Moines...never saw one there either.

Anyone have them in their town/neighborhood?

The Quad Cities have plenty, with Stan's being the best in my opinion. I think Des Moines might have some kind of weird law about mobile food vendors. I assume you at least saw them on TV/in movies?

Cedar Rapids had ice cream trucks when my kids were young. Don't know if they do now since I'm not home during the day.

I grew up in southern California and the ice cream truck was a daily occurrence. Brings back lots of great memories!

I have seen them on TV/in the movies, yes. Just never in person. As a kid I wished we did have them, but I lived a few blocks from a 7-11 so that was almost as good HAHA (Riding my bike holding a Slurpee...memories!)

Saw one parked at Circle K last night, so I took a quick look at it close up LOL Then I saw the driver inside. He was in front of me in line, buying Jose Cuervo.

Des Moines has food trucks (like taco trucks) so I don't know about laws regarding them. And I am not saying for sure that DM doesn't have them AT ALL, I just know I have never seen one.

The closest thing I can think of to DSM ever having ice cream trucks was Schwan's.

Growing up, the Illinois side of the Quad Cities had them, but I never saw an Ice Cream truck on the Iowa side until I was probably 25 yrs old. Now everytime I come home, I see 2 or 3 of them a day (in the summer).

They are legal, but there was apparently an incident 40 years ago where a young girl was killed by an ice cream truck crossing the street, and now the city won't give them permits. I guess there's a fear they will draw too many little kids out onto busy streets?

I heard one while sunbathing the other day. (have to rub that in since it is snowing in much of Iowa haha) I was going to totally run out and get some ice cream since I have never experienced that...but it was too far away. Bummer!

I grew up outside of Sioux City. We had ice cream trucks out from late spring to early fall. They're not year-round like they are in Phoenix, but they're definitely there.
