Hello,
I am a current resident living in Dubuque for the last several years. I originally came out from the Chicago Suburbs to work out here. Needless to say, its a slower pace of life, and I'm contemplating relocating to QC for work. Does anyone have any experience how QC relates to Chicago Surburbs & Dubuque? Obviously it is much smaller but it does have quicker interstate access and is 6x the size of Dubuque.

Just curious people's opinions. I don't want to knock on Dubuque but its been a tough go at it the last 5 years and I'm looking for something different. Does QC have enough to offer?

Thanks!

The QCA is borderline small and boring. But for it's size there's tons of festivals and what not. Plenty of local and chain restaurants. And all your shopping/big box stores are covered. Plus minor league sports, casinos, concert venues... It can cover most bases.

Growing up in the QCA my favorite thing about it was that Des Moines, Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, Kansas city, Omaha, St Louis, Minneapolis, Indianapolis etc are all within about 2 1/2 - 5 hrs away. And those are just the bigger cities.. What the QCA doesn't have those other cities are all a car ride away.

We were all about going to concerts when I was a teen.. Back when music festivals like lollapalooza traveled we'd be able to go 3 or 4 times if we wanted.

Dubuque does not have a major concert venue. The QC has an arena that attracts big concerts like Janet Jackson, Elton John, and Blake Shelton.

Dubuque does not have a professional sports team. The QC has professional baseball and hockey that are affiliated with actual MLB and NHL teams. It also has a PGA Tour event that Dubuque does not.

Dubuque's airport has three flights a day, and they're all to O'Hare. The QC has an airport with more flights to various destinations like Atlanta, Denver, Orlando, and Las Vegas.

Dubuque does not have a local TV station. The QC has five...with digital sub-channels.

Dubuque does not have a Fortune 500 company headquartered in town. The QC does.

Dubuque's retail scene lacks major national retailers like Marshalls, DSW and Ross' Dress For Less. The QC has those stores, and other specialty retailers Dubuque does not.

Concerts, sports, air travel, local media, business, shopping. No matter which category you're looking at, the QC has more to offer than Dubuque. That said, the Quad Cities is really nothing special. It just has more to offer than Dubuque in nearly every category.

Any other opinions? May be trying for a new job in QC and looking for feedback on the decision, leaning to make a move.

Be more specific. The QCA is probly 4 or 5 times bigger and feels like it. What're you into, smaller or bigger?

Technically it still does, but it's now a Christian TV station, and most stations of that format carry programming from a satellite (a far cry from when it was an ABC affiliate)

Is it still true that you still need cable or satellite to see any TV in Dubuque because it is deep in a ravine and has no TV translators?

I've read that the movie F.I.S.T. was filmed in Dubuque (cast as Cleveland) because it was set in the 1940s and Dubuque had no TV antennas that would have been period detail errors.

QCA is boring, yes there are festivals and the food is really good, there are a lot of great local restaurants. If you like motorcycles and beer this is your place.

For more specifics, rents I feel are kind of high compared to other places especially if you need space.

Looks like not much has changed in the area since I moved away some years ago. We used to have our own TV station , channel 40 I think it was. I remember the hey days of John Deere and the Dubuque Packing House where my and my friends folks all worked. In any event sounds like you should make the move as QC is larger and has a bit more stuff.

Dubuque is an anchor city in the TV market of Cedar Rapids/Waterloo/Dubuque. The aforementioned Christian station used to be a FOX affiliate.

Sportswise, you have "junior hockey", whatever that is, and Union Dubuque FC soccer. Also University of Dubuque (NCAA Div III).

Thanks to all the posters who replied! I am currently looking to move to QC and relocate within my job. Just waiting for something to open. I recently started dating my girlfriend who lives down there so it will accelerate the process a bit :-) (6 months).
