My husband and I are considering moving to Iowa, but we really don't know much about it yet. What are some safe, smaller cities or towns that aren't super expensive?

We need a lot more details: do you need to be near hospitals? The airport? Do you want to work a few hours a week?

Off the top of my head, I would recommend Indianola or Adel if you want to be within 25-30 miles of the Des Moines metro.

If you like college towns but don't like Iowa City, there's Ames and Cedar Falls, neither of which are especially cheap, but Ames has a bus service, and I know a senior couple who retired there and like it just fine. They don't drive much, but they are within walking distance of a grocery (and downtown and their church) with several doctors within a few miles. Their children and grand children are within a two-hour drive.

Really, any small town in Iowa is very safe and not all that expensive, especially assuming you're coming from any larger city.

I live in Northeast Iowa, and there's no town over 10,000 people in this part of the state. Decorah is the largest town, and it's about 9,000. I really like this area as it's very safe, clean, and has a ton of outdoor recreation opportunity (look up the Driftless Area). It's becoming a little expensive as people from Minneapolis and Chicago have discovered it (due to it's two world class breweries) and are buying vacation and retirement homes there. The surrounding communities like Cresco, Calmar, and Waukon are all safe, tidy small towns (2-4K people) that are cheaper than Decorah, but still very close.

You've pretty much described every single small town in Iowa. They are all safe and inexpensive to live in, especially compared to any of the coastal areas of the U.S. Even our urban cities are comparably safe and inexpensive to live in compared to larger urban centers in other states.

Hello, Sorry to jump on the question, but I have a similar inquiry... We are considering moving to Iowa. We have researched small, economical and safe towns and came up with: Alton and Sibley.. Can you; the locals provide your input in regards to these towns? I want to know if the info on different sites is accurate and reliable. THANK YOU!

I'd be interested as well. Yes, a small town/rural but within 20-25 min of a hospital. Also, I assume the jobs would be in the bigger cities? If so - does anyone have any recommendations? I'll check the threads to learn more about Iowa. Thanks

Please come for a visit! That's the only way you'll really see whether or not these areas are a good fit for you.

We are planning a visit to our top cities in November

just wanted a personal input as to their own experiences as data and neighborhood data is very impersonal.

Thank you

I'm surprised NOBODY mentioned Council Bluffs. Or, maybe I'm not surprised.

On the local forum in that area, I read something "EastCB" and "really needs help" -- or something.

Is the East side of Council Bluffs going downhill, or something? I always thought the East side was the nicer side, and the west side was the junkier side, and needed more a boost. Yet, some don't like any of the town at all.

I'm not sure Council Bluffs would be right for you. But, it is smaller, and less expensive.
