Fort Madison compared to Iowa City? Nothing in common. Fort Madison is a small river city with a declining population and a more manufacturing industrial oriented economy. Iowa City is a college town with a younger population with more economic growth- along with closer to access to Des Moines as well.

I've driven though Ft. Madison, but I haven't stopped to look around. Iowa City is a vibrant college town, with a lot going on every weekend. It costs a lot more to live there, but depending on what field you work in, it's more likely you can find a job to offset the higher COL.
If I had to live on that end of the state, I would live in Tiffin, west of Iowa City and work in IC. Costs are a bit lower but it's still close.
I dunno. I had a chance to move there, and I decided on the Des Moines area. It was and is still the better choice for me. There's better job opportunities and a lot more to do at any given time of the year.

Ft. Madison is also home to the state pen. Not that there's anything inherently wrong with it, but there's a certain stigma involved with housing some of worst the state has to offer.

Both cities have good and bad points, but despite the fact that they're close geographically the guy looking for what Iowa City has to offer probably isn't going to like Fort Madison, and vise-versa.

The Mississippi River communities (Keokuk, Ft. Madison, Burlington, etc) in the state have a lot of issues: a large welfare population, crime, drugs, poor quality medical care. They've seen a large influx of former Chicago residents who are attempting to find places where their government benefits go further so to speak. They are almost without exception communities in decline and one would have to think long and hard before moving to one.
