Hello again, I believe I have choosen Davenport in which I will be relocating to. Can anyone let me know what areas to stay away from, close to schools, day care, and stores. How far is Davenport from Chicago? Also if anyone has any websites that can assisst me with house rentals, I would appreciate it. Thanks again for your input. Does Davenport have alot of crime??

Davenport doesn't have a lot of crime, but there are bad neighborhoods to stay away from. It's neighbor Bettendorf has very little crime. Chicago is going to be about 2.5 hrs away.

Locust St & north is alright, You don't want to be in the west end (5th st to the river/ Marquet St west) after dark, the gang element is there, and Davenport has seen driveby shootings at and north of VanDerveer park, be careful!!

I find it hard to buy into all of this "gang activity" going on in Davenport. I'm sure there is some - but honestly, do I need to tell you how many times I've been to VanderVeer at night and felt extremely safe? If you go there on any summer night there are always families walking around and kids around the lit up fountain.

Unless you associate with gang members or drug dealers, Davenport is very safe. Almost all serious crime in the area is between people who know each other. Unfortunately this raises our crime rate and makes the city look bad, even though the "average person" has very little to worry about.

Well, apparently you haven't heard about the little girl who was shot dead at her b-day party by a stray bullet a few years back, they caught the guys but you can't sugar coat Davenport or the QC's as a whole....
I moved out in Nov '06, I was born and raised there, and KWQC has more news about gangs and robberies, but QCI, I don't mean to step on toes but have you ever lived "On the Street"?
(THATS why I moved my family to SW Mn!!!)

3 years ago - one person - random incident. This doesn't make a convicing case that Davenport has cold, hard streets. And of course the media sensationalizes stories. It's the media.

QCI is right - the majority if crime in any city is between a bunch of losers who know each other. Average good citizens with at least half a brain have nothing to worry about - especially in the Quad Cities!

If I recall correctly, they people shooting were shooting at that party. While they weren't shooting at the little girl, and of course she was innocent, I am pretty sure they were shooting at the people she was "associating" with. I could be wrong, and I'm looking for a news story about it, but that's the way I remember it.

I can't think of anyone killed in Davenport by someone they didn't know in the last 5 years.

Edit: I found the article on the QCTimes here, and also a legal document with this description:

"Background Facts and Proceedings. On July 21, 2001, in celebration of the wedding of Phyllis and Marvin Miller, family members gathered in the backyard of the Miller house in Davenport. Two cars, each with several occupants, drove by the backyard and began firing into the crowd. A bullet struck nine-year-old Deanna Shipp as she sat on the hood of a parked car. An ambulance transported Deanna to the hospital, but she was pronounced dead shortly after.
The groom’s brother, Albert Miller, recognized several of the young men in the cars and left the scene of the shooting to find them. When he arrived at the corner of 13th and Marquette Streets, he saw people standing around the two cars he had seen earlier. Shots were exchanged, and the people by the cars dispersed.
"

Don't be scared of Davenport, Iowa. This is really a great place to live. Check out the McClellan Heights neighborhood (which is South of Locust Street...and I mention this because another reply you got told you to stay away from anything South of Locust street. There are some neighborhoods that are South of Locust that are fine fine fine!) In fact McClellan Heights is one of the best neighborhoods in Davenport. Older homes...many with Mississippi River views! In fact we own a home in this area and love it. The neighborhood is VERY family friendly...always hosting some sort of block party of TGIF event. The neighborhood elementary school is within walking distance (McKinley Elementary School).

Some other great neighborhoods to check out would be the Windsor Crest, and Edgewild Estates. Yes Bettendorf is another good city to live in...but I am partial to Davenport.

In the summer there are some fabulous festivals you must attend. The Beaux Arts Fest, The Blues Festival, The Bix Festival, Symphony Pops Concert in the park. Really there are endless things to do around here not to mention the riverboat gambling casinos and more. Come and check it out. I bet you will love it too!

PS...Chicago is about 2.5 hours from here.

Davenport, Iowa is a great place to live! You are like 2 to 2.5 hours away from Chicago and about 2.5 hours away from Des Moines, Iowa. I like it because you don't really have to travel too far if you want to see concerts and etc......... I have moved out of Davenport about 4 times and something keeps pulling me back to Davenport.............. Ive moved to Texas, New Jersey, Washington, and Maine. Crime is everywhere ............. every little town or big city has crime............. Heres a link that you should check out about Davenport.........has all the info on Davenport.
