Hello: I'm potentially moving to the Cedar Rapids/ Waterloo area from Boston, MA. I am looking for good information as too a nice, safe neighborhood that would be fun and not lonely for someone who does not know anyone in this area but is excited about starting a new chapter in life. I'm sinlge, 31, and have no kids. would love an apartment to start in a friendly community.... any help would be appreciated !

Well, that would depend on what you are moving for. If you're moving for a job, I would definitely stick to the city/area your job would be in as Cedar Rapids and Waterloo aren't very close (about 45 minutes to an hour or more depending on where you're going).

If your job is in Waterloo, I would recommend Cedar Falls. Cedar Falls is adjacent to Waterloo and is a friendly town with a lot of activities, especially for young people (University of Northern Iowa is located here).

If your job is in Cedar Rapids, I would recommend living downtown or in Iowa City/Coralville (20 to 30 minutes away). Coralville and Iowa City is a friendly and very sociable area. It is also the most progressive area in the state and I would recommend moving there (unless this is why you're leaving MA!) Honestly, I'm not sure about the different neighborhoods in Cedar Rapids, but the few people I know and visit there either live downtown or on the SW side and this is where my recommendation comes from.

The areas I have heard* are bad and should be avoided are East Waterloo, SE Cedar Rapids, and S Iowa City.

Hope this helps!

*This is what I've heard, so please, no hostile remarks from those that live in these areas!
