Is wrestling a popular sport in this state?

I do not mean the WWE kind of wrestling, but the collegiate style

Probably more so than in most places. The International Wrestling Institute and Museum is in Newton, Iowa, about 40 miles east of the Des Moines metro. 75,000 people came to watch the high school wrestling tournament in Des Moines last week. The two major state universities have nationally recognized and highly ranked wrestling programs, and Iowa State University's wrestling team is coached by olympic gold medalist wrestler Cael Sanderson.

#1 Iowa vs. #2 Iowa State at Carver-Hawkeye Arena a few months ago broke the all time NCAA attendance record for wrestling. The number:

15,955

Yes. Wrestling, on both a high school and collegiate level, is very popular in Iowa.

it is the biggest sport in the state?

how many kids take part? Not just in organized leagues, but do native iowans like to just go out into the yard and wrestle around for fun?

why is it a popular sport in your state?

just curious, and how many of you wrestled?

Oh, yes. Wrestling is a popular sport in Iowa. Knowing this from living about 15 miles from the Iowa border, having relatives there, and visiting Iowa many times. My relatives in Iowa wrestled. Two of my uncles were good at wrestling and made it to the state tournaments back in the late 1980s-early 1990s and my cousin wrestled when he was in grade school. From my memories of watching wrestling meets, the high school gyms were jam packed with people. Wrestling is not one of my favorite sports, but I had some vivid memories of watching my relatives participate and my brother participated in it (in his grade school days) in South Dakota.

Iowa is definitely a stronghold in the sport, other states such as South Dakota, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Minnesota have many high school and college programs that have wrestling and are states that come to my mind of having wrestling interest.

I am not from Iowa, but I have a hint as to why wrestling is a popular sport in Iowa: Dan Gable. Iowa has provided some of the best wrestlers and coaches to US Olympic teams for many decades, and they have brought home a collection of medals that would make any state proud. Iowa's universities are a still top choice for wrestlers from around the US because of their record of competitive success.

Backyard jello wrestling is a right of passage in Iowa. Most of us head out to the back yard to toss around a few wrestling moves with the closest neighbor.

It's not that major of sport, basketball and football still reign supreme here. The tradition of having strong wrestling programs is here just as there's hockey at all levels in Minnesota-Wisconsin and parts of the NE.
