We recently moved to the W'loo/ Cedar Falls area from Michigan. Now that the weather is getting nicer, I would like to find family-friendly things to do on the weekends with our 7 and 5 year old kids. Suggestions for nearby activities or those that are within a 2 hour drive or so would be great! We are trying to get to know our new state/ area and are interested in zoos, beaches, parks, amusement parks, water parks, museums, or cool towns with interesting places to visit for the day. Thank you in advance for all your help!

Of course I have to recommend Dubuque, which is 1.5 hrs from Waterloo.

The kids would really enjoy the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium which has turtles, otters & other animals, and lots of great exhibits to check out. Definitely go when the weather is warm, you'll be able to enjoy the outside exhibits also. The Mississippi Riverwalk is closeby, and you could take a cruise on the "Spirit of Dubuque" and I KNOW they'd enjoy the Grand Harbor Resort & Waterpark. The waterpark-part is very kid-oriented. Also be sure to ride the Fenelon Place Elevator or make a visit to the city's Eagle Point Park which has un-beatable views of the Mississippi River Valley.

Other places to check out within your 2 hr radius...
Des Moines has a nice-sized amusement park: Adventureland. Always enjoyed going there as a kid. Check out Living History Farms if in the DSM area.

Des Moines' zoo is fairly nice also, perhaps give that a look.

The Science Station in Cedar Rapids is very kid-friendly and would be a fun place to take the kids.... although I'm not sure if its reopened yet following the flood last summer. Some interesting stuff to check out there. I think they may still have an IMAX theater also.

Try some of these places out! I'm sure you'll find something your family will enjoy.
