I would recommend:
Polk City- Beautiful state parks, smaller school district, with an easy communte to Des Moines at 15 minutes. This is a smaller town so it won't offer as much in the schools.

Johnston- Suburb of Des Moines. Rated on the top 10 Iowa schools. Great community!

Ankeny- Beautiful parks with Des Moines only 10 mins away. Rated #1 school district in Iowa. I work in Ankeny and absolutely love it!

I dont know where you got your info from about Des Moines being expensive/high spanish population. The east and south side of Des Moines can be sketchy. I live in Urbandale and I have not once encounter any of that.

The OP hasn't logged in since last November. I hope she got out of the homeless shelter and got back on her feet. (I checked her posting history, again)

I hope I don't offend anyone with the following lists but I have the top reasons I want out of Utah (my current home) and what I am looking for in my new town.

Out of Utah:
1. Too many "Must speak Spanish to apply" companies
2. My son's school only has 120 English speaking kids in the whole school and is a dual-immersion school (half the classes are in Spanish and half are in English)
3. Too much religious involvement (they tore down the downtown malls and will be spending the next 4 years rebuilding it)
4. Home prices are too high ($180,000+ for the gang side of town)
5. Everything is too high priced and very low wages
and the list goes on and on including crime, drugs, etc

New Town:
1. Must have city parks that people can actually use
2. Good schools (my son is only 5 but is doing 3rd grade work in some subjects)
3. Jobs available (I have a degree in economics and 12 years retail experience but don't care what I do)
4. Prefer small population (around 50,000 or less)
5. Housing prices must be reasonable
6. My son wants a soccer team that he could play on and music classes in the school (they removed them in his school)
7. My son wants a planetarium or somewhere he can put his telescope

I am really looking to take a step back and show him what he is missing right now. I have about $5,000 to move on but could get a bit more if needed. I know I can't buy a house with that but if it is at least in my range in a few years I would love it. I have looked into Spencer (all I heard about it was references to Spirit Lake), Ames and Iowa City. Nothing has really jumped out yet.

Any advice or places to look more into? I really don't want to go to Des Moines if I don't have to. Too much like where I am at right now from what I have heard.
I too think Dubuque would be a good choice for you and your son. It is a family oriented city with lots of activities, community events, outdoor fun, and lots of things to do with kids. Also has very good schools and is reasonably close to other larger cities if you want to venture out occasionally.

Oh wow, guess I'll have to start checking the OP date. I didn't see her post was from 4 years ago. Well I guess she moved somewhere by now.
