the thing about iowa is that we know everyone. I'm serious, I run into someone who babysat for a frind of mines mom and stuff like that, coming back to my orginal comment iowa is like a close knit family they have a hard time accepting newcomers but once they get the feel for you they love you

I love being from here. My German family came here illegally in 1853 and we have been here ever since!
I'm telling INS!

Hi all. I love Jay100's comments. They are pretty spot on. I am English (from United Kingdom) but had a Girl Friend in the areas of Iowa that are being discussed here and as Jay100 is pointing out, they take no prisoners in these parts and it can feel most unwelcoming for an outsider. Sorry folks if you live in these parts. I found Arizona more welcoming which surprised me. My survival tool was to allow the locals to have a bit of a laugh at my expense and to respect them for who they were. I was on their patch and it was put up or **** up to a degree. I knew it would not be together. Amusingly they all knew who TONY BLAIR was at the time and that we were all buddies in Iraq. Apart from that, I don't even think they knew where London was, even though 8 million people live there. My strong English accent was totally alien to them and my god am I glad that I wasn't gay.............. but, on a positive note, you can find a middle ground with these folk of Iowa and I feel I did that and it took time but it worked. I understand the feelings of being alone and its not easy but I wish you all the luck in the world - just try and meet them as I said on their level. Once a friend and you are over that fence, they will accept you much more and your time there will be ok. I understand what Jay100 means by never going back but give it your best shot. If an Englishman can survive there for 2 years, anyone can.

God Bless you all - the UK and America. Great countries to live in. Rod.
