I'm going to agree with H777, Hugo and Mump are the best. I wasn't aware they permanently separated from The Asylum.
They were both very professional, they have the tattoing part of their store away from prying eyes, which was a huge part in why I got all of mine from them.

I have heard many great things about Heroic Ink, but am more familiar with Jaded Angel (where my piercer works). As far as tattoos go, I couldn't give a personal opinion of H.I. OR J.A., but I, too, am looking for the best in the Ames/Des Moines area as I am getting a memorial piece over my heart for my grandfather who passed almost a year ago. Hope this helps!

Maybe. Depends what the best tattoo artist in Ames is looking for. Restaurant? Hair stylist? Mechanic? DJ service? A little info would be helpful here.

If IAPonyGirl and her daughter don't have their tats yet after 3 years I'm sure it will be a big help.
