First, I would like to say I was raised in Iowa. Iowa isnt that bad of a place to live. I was lucky enuff not have have completed college and land a really good paying job. Here is why you never want to move to Davenport.

If you are not a native to Davenport, you will allways love the speed cameras they have on some streets. I heard a lady moved here from Wisconsin and recieved 600 dollars worth of tickets in 2 weeks time. Now, normally I wouldnt really complain about this, but sense Davenport has tons of cash , why are not all of the streets ice and snow free. The city does not even plow all the streets worth a crap. You would figure with all the revenue from the speed camera's they could atleast make the streets safe free from snow or ice. The speed cameras fuction was to make streets safe for driving so the city counsil says, not money. Obviously, look at our snow covered streets and tell me that agian with a streight face. So, now that you know they dont plow there streets that well, enjoy the fact that Davenport makes you shovel your side walk. If you do not shovel your side walk , the city hires someone to do it, at your expense. Kinida funny, my side walk is clear and I have 1 inch of ice on my street right in front of my house. I also live in the heart of the city and can not get DSL high speed internet because Davenport has no contract for utilitiy companies to upgrade there equipment. Most good citites have wording in the contract ,for companies that provided services in there area, to upgrade there equipment. Also, look at the Iowa ACLU website, Davenport Has recieved the most complaints of any city in the whole state. In conclusion, I am happy to say ill be out of this city in 1 year. If you plan on moving to Iowa dont let Davenport have the honor of recieving your taxes. Better choices to live,Bettendorf, Leclare,Eldridge,Dewitt, and Durrrant.

I don't know much about Davenport, but I know of at least a few other cities that do the same thing. Personally, I think when we move I will pay the city of Oskaloosa the $0.11 per sq ft to shovel it for me.

Just sayin.

Wow. We lived in Davenport for nine years and loved it. I really like the beautiful river views and hilly countryside. I thought that the snow removal was just fine, but in some of the very hilly neighborhoods could be less than optimal (we just drove cars that could get through snow). Due to John Deere and Alcoa, unemployment can be more cylical there than in some other Iowa towns, but all in all, was my favorite place to live in Iowa (we now live in Des Moines and like it, but not as much as the Quad Cities).

I lived in Davenport for almost 2 years, and not once did I bother shoveling snow. The city didnt either. No one cared.

Why is this post in the Iowa City sub-forum? I was expecting complaints about IC, or maybe Coralville...not HOPING for them, just expecting that's what the post would be about, given its location. Then I thought maybe IC would be listed in the "better choices" at the end of the post, but still no.

It's not the city's job to shovel snow on residents' sidewalks, but I wish they would enforce their snow shoveling rules.
