Your offended, I get it. No personal attacks.

You can act like that in public, but it may end poorly. The CD forums are not a place for insulting people that spend their time educating you. You suggest that she should not respond negatively after a long and painful experience, but you respond negatively after disagreeing with her post. You respond negatively to me after a very reasoned and intelligent post, because you do not wish to consider any other view points. How do you see your actions as being morally superior to his or hers?

If someone is in a place they do not wish to be, and did not know they would end up there, they are a victim of the circumstance. Your opinion will not change fact, but you are welcome to post it, so long as the opinion you are posting is not an attack.

Edit: I reviewed post 496. It is not clear that a distinction has been made between the city in which she resides and the entire state. It is therefore a matter of opinion if her comments are designed to reflect views about all people in Iowa, or specifically about the ones she has encountered. Her desire to move out of the state may also simply indicate that she believes there will be better opportunities for her elsewhere. It is a small leap to state that this means she holds the views about everyone -- which is really a question that only she could answer. Had the comment been worded differently, it may have altered the discussion dramatically. However, her response to Iowa is no more over the line than yours was, and the feelings she unleashed were built up over a period far longer than the few minutes you spent going over the post.

Smile Scenic City of Iowa Falls

I appreciated your reference to the "scenic city of Iowa Falls." I am planning to semi-retire there, after 50 yrs absence from the state of Iowa. I am convinced that it has the best to offer in wholesome and inexpensive small town living. There is historic value in the museum and theatre, recreation on the golf course and in water activities on the Iowa River, education at the community college, health advantages with the hospital, and good eating in its several dining facilities. These spell comfort, wouldn't you say?

Lately, I've started to change my mind about leaving the state. We have been able to travel to different parts of the country extensively (partly due to Iowa's central location) and we also have two sons who have lived out of state. (One wants to end up in Iowa, the other is still sold on Texas). Central Iowa has great bike trails and four seasons to enjoy them on. I live in West Des Moines and the schools and shopping are great. You have everything you need, and all within 15 minutes. And Des Moines has the "culture" I want, with jazz fests, events on the river, the civic center, etc. Big 12 games are less than an hour away in Ames. I am middle aged but am beginning to get sold on Iowa. It is a great place to live and now I probably won't leave!

I can appreciate your sentiments here about Iowa Falls. It's river setting is very attractive & the town seems to have made the most of it. My small home town was in the same athletics conference as Iowa Falls & had 2 good-sized rivers flowing through it so we had a similar outdoor playground of water, hilly woods & hiking trails in abundance that I took advantage of & loved to the maximum. I always felt bad for the folks in the towns that did not have any kind of a water setting.
After finishing at ISU in the late 1970's, I worked in Des Moines for a year and a half before relocating to the big city.
My more recent trips to Des Moines & Iowa have left me with regrets that I am not living up there now. But there's always retirement back to there which I see is being considered here by others.
On Saturday afternoon as I sat on a major interstate route in Atlanta in the midst of a 6 plus mile traffic backup because of a major wreck, I thought repeatedly, "This too shall pass."

Moving to Keokuk soon. I know that town has a terrible reputation. But my partner (soon to be husband) has a great job there and I love that our new home is an inexpensive rental that overlooks the Mississippi River. The people seem to be incredibly friendly (perhaps too nice). I am OK with the climate and looking forward to the eagles next winter. Keokuk seems OK, but I will most likely turn to Burlington and Ft. Madison for work and friends. Those small cities seem to have stronger nonprofit sectors. As a gay guy moving from rural Indiana to rural Iowa, I am really looking forward to Iowa. Am I nuts?

Reading everyone's posts has been helpful in understanding that its not just me. I live in cedar falls, and have lived in Iowa for just over 4 yrs and I have tried to accept Iowa as my home but I can't. There is nothing here that I enjoy. People are so aloof and self absorbed. So two faced and gossipy. It surprises me that in a place of supposedly very religious people, there is so much jealousy, back stabbing, judgement and deceit. I come from not only a very liberal city on the west coast of British Columbia, but Canada in general is very liberal and open-minded. I'm not religious and really am disgusted by the ignorance I am faced with on a daily basis. I want to move, likely west, out of Iowa but want to find somewhere that will provide a good quality of life that is affordable. I would prefer to discuss the details in a private message but if anyone can suggest some places I would really be grateful. I hate the humidity here, I love the sun, I would like an acreage or at least a house in a neighborhood that has housing that is private from neighbors and not crammed in within arms reach. I don't like everyone knowing my business all the time. What is the deal with Iowans hanging out in their driveways all day and night?!? This place is so boring! No wonder all people do is drink and watch sports and gamble. Zzzzzzzz........ Please help me get outta here!!
Maybe you should consider CA? I bet you would love it here, it's so open minded that its brains have fallen out but that shouldn't bother you. You'll have sun, fun and very educated people who will never offend you by saying something ignorant because you'll likely be on their same wave length.

I say this not to be snotty but to be honest; from what you described you would like CA. No one will ever be in your business because no one will take the time to speak to you or even notice you. When you do talk to people, they will likely share your same views.

Have fun!

You have nothing to offer, besides fast food places.

You people think that eating at McDonald's is living it up (In fact, you made a thread about a new fast food place coming into town).
