Hello!!
I am new here and am wondering some questions about Dubuque, IA. My boyfriend is looking into a new job and it may require us to move to Dubuque. I have been looking online at some homes and noticed that Dubuque is a little pricey in some areas. I was wondering if any of you could help me out by suggesting some good places to move to. We are looking to raise a family, so a nice family orientated community would be ideal. Where is the "bad" part of town that we should avoid? How are the schools? Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thank you!

My personal preference is to cross the bridge and live in East Dubuque, Illinois. There are some wonderful neighborhoods (not the flats) and the schools are nice. I personally favor the "fruit hill" area (apple, peach, etc.), but it is hard to find a home for sale in that area.

Otherwise, Dubuque is really rather safe, but avoid the areas around Central, Jackson, 22nd Street, etc.

Thank you so much for your input!! Any information is so helpful. I have never been to either cities so I have been relying on google maps haha! Do you know anything about the area by the botanical gardens? I noticed that they have some new neighborhoods there for a decent price.

That area would be fine. In fact, any new area would be good.

Do not try to rent in Dubuque. I have been here for about 6 months, and ended up in the WI side. People in Dubuque got very greedy over the IBM new hires, and prices shot up about 30% for shacks I would not house my ex-wife in. Many of them became rude, and treat new IBM employees as if they were their lottery ticket. IBM itself is suffering, since people tend to stay for the minimum they have too, until things at home "get better". I doubt that IBM will stay in Dubuque longer than 3-5 years, they will never meet their hiring quotas, and will probably prefer to pay a fine and get the hell out of here. the locals are very short sighted, and do not understand why we do not buy or accept their rental prices. Home prices shot up as well, about 15%-20% in the past year, and they wonder why the inventory is so big.
As for IBM, it's IBM. an administrative cluster F..k if you ask me. 90% of the people came since they lost their job elsewhere, not because they "could not wait to move to Dubuque". As soon as the economy picks up, many of them will leave, since the salary / cost of living ratio is no longer worth the stay.
Sorry Dubuque, get get a grip or bust!

We rent 1000 sq ft for $1195, crazy (this will back fire on a few greedy one's within 5 years). The schools have been neglected as most are on "in need of assistance" status or very overcrowded. A school board member recently responded in the local paper "he wouldn't lose sleep over it". The school's lunch menu is a joke on a bun. It even has a designation for pork products (thanks for the warning). Every aspect of life is a little behind the times and slow. The locals rave about the new "kohl's", are you kidding me. With all the new ee's at IBM, Hormel and a few other locations, you think they'd be getting involved with upgrading the town and schools to a modern time society.

I love dubuque, i love skiing at chestnut and eating at marios downtown, but i couldnt see living there, id say look up the road at my hometown of Madison, it is well out of the question for commuting but if you can find a job up there i highly recommend it, best schools outside of suburban chicago in the midwest and it is a great place to raise a family, not to mention a robust economy despite the recession
