Well It kinda goes in spurts. South East Polk well be good for a couple years, then Valley, or Dowling-Roosevelt can get there everyonce in awhile. Most people in Iowa when they have a kid talented in ball don't move to a different community so they can attend a certain school. But yes Valley usually is always good atleast out of Des Moines. Your REALLY good schools are in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids as of lately, the one's the compete and beat Valley atleast.

Is HS football popular in Iowa? Yes.

Is HS football a religion, like in Texas? No.

In the Quad Cities, Bettendorf and Assumption always have a good team, but it's not a big deal as far as the community is concerned.

You'll find nothing in Iowa to compare to football in Texas. That could be good or that could be bad....depends on your prospective.

As with most cities, the suburban schools tend to do better than the inner city schools. DM city schools have gotten better over the last few years, but still not to the caliber of W DM Valley or SE Polk or Catholic school - Dowling.

I can't speak for present day, but there were big game crowds when I was in high school there 10 years ago. I knew players, cheerleaders, and marching band members, and they all had a good time and had lots of support from the community. It certainly doesn't compare to Texas (and that level of devotion is a bit frightening to me) but the communities do come out for the games and are supportive of high school athletics in general. Since there are no professional sports in IA and I found a lot of people were big fans of high school and college sports since those were their local teams that they felt connected to.
